The capacity to form H-DNA cannot substitute for GAGA factor binding to a (CT)n*(GA)n regulatory site.

Previous studies of the Drosophila melanogaster hsp26 gene promoter have demonstrated the importance of a homopurine*homopyrimidine segment [primarily (CT)n*(GA)n] for chromatin structure formation and gene activation. (CT)n regions are known to bind GAGA factor, a dominant enhancer of PEV thought to play a role in generating an accessible chromatin structure. The (CT)n region can also form an ...

A functionally conserved boundary element from the mouse HoxD locus requires GAGA factor in Drosophila.

Hox genes are necessary for proper morphogenesis and organization of various body structures along the anterior-posterior body axis. These genes exist in clusters and their expression pattern follows spatial and temporal co-linearity with respect to their genomic organization. This colinearity is conserved during evolution and is thought to be constrained by the regulatory mechanisms that invol...

GAGA: Model Building Genetic Algorithms Using Sub-population and Sub-probability Vector

The Compact Genetic Algorithm (cGA) has a distinct characteristic that it requires almost minimal memory to store candidate solutions. The probability vector is used to generate candidate solutions. This probability vector represents a structure of the population as a probability distribution over the set of solution. It has been established that the power of cGA is comparable to the standard S...

GAGA factor binding to DNA via a single trinucleotide sequence element.

GAGA transcription factor (GAF) is an essential protein in Drosophila , important for the transcriptional regulation of numerous genes. GAF binds to GA repeats in the promoters of these genes via a DNA-binding domain containing a single zinc finger. While GAF binding sites are typically composed of 3.5 GA repeats, the Drosophila hsp70 gene contains much smaller elements, some of which are as li...

Chromatin remodeling mediated by Drosophila GAGA factor and ISWI activates fushi tarazu gene transcription in vitro.

GAGA factor is known to remodel the chromatin structure in concert with nucleosome-remodeling factor NURF in a Drosophila embryonic S150 extract. The promoter region of the Drosophila fushi tarazu (ftz) gene carries several binding sites for GAGA factor. Both the GAGA factor-binding sites and GAGA factor per se are necessary for the proper expression of ftz in vivo. We observed transcriptional ...
